Stepping into Lord of Mysteries feels less like starting an anime and more like wandering into a dream you can’t fully name. The first thing that strikes you is the art style—somber, muted tones steeped in shadow, as if the world itself is drawing you in. The cobbled streets of Tingen are drenched in fog, lanterns throw long claws of light across narrow alleys, and every ritual circle, every Tarot motif, seems to whisper that something vast and unknowable waits just beyond the frame.
Watching it, you almost sense there’s a piece missing. The anime offers fragments—Klein’s footsteps echoing through empty streets, the flicker of flame in occult chambers, the shimmer of Beyonder rituals—but it never hands you the full picture. And strangely, that absence feels deliberate. This is, after all, a story about secrets. About what hides behind masks, about truths glimpsed only in flashes. The mystery isn’t just part of the plot—it seeps into the way the show is told.
You’ll sometimes find yourself leaning forward, trying to catch details that slip through your fingers. Questions pile up faster than answers. Without Klein’s inner monologues—the thoughts and logic that carried the novel—it can feel like wandering a labyrinth without a map. It could be haunting, but not for fans of mystery thrillers.
Lord of Mysteries may as well be one of these rare anime where watching alone isn’t enough. To truly remain sane, you’ll need to step beyond the screen—into the novel, or at least the manga to get some more content, moving ahead of the series to satisfy a newly found hunger for more.
Still, there’s something undeniably captivating about the donghua. Even when you feel lost, the mood holds you. The gothic shadows, the ritualistic unease, the blend of steampunk and supernatural—all of it creates a world that demands you look closer, that teases you with the sense that the answers are there, just barely out of reach.
So is Lord of Mysteries worth watching? Absolutely, and I would go further to say that, it is the best Chinese Anime that I have seen; something that could rival Aot, ok maybe I got too excited there but you get the gist; It is that good.
